A Guide to Potion-Making

"I can teach you how to bottle fame, brew glory, even stopper death..."

Potions

Overview
Potions come in a variety of types and can be brewed for various usages. Some give you card/item rewards while others can help you out in the game. Mostly potions will effect your Magical EXP and replace standard reward coupons.

You cannot brew potions until you reach the level: First Year. Ingredients and Magical EXP may be collected during the Muggle level.

Potion Requirements
Depending on what potion you wish to brew there are certain requirements:

Magical EXP - Almost all potions require you to use a certain amount of your Magical EXP.

Level - Like Magical EXP, all potions have a level requirement. This means you can only brew the potion if you have reached a certain level. Once you have "learned" the potion to can continue to brew it.
Exception: You will be given opportunities to brew "advanced" potions or potions that are in a higher level. This will usually be accomplished by your Magical EXP.

Ingredients - All potions have ingredients and you must make sure you have all of the ingredients for the potion.

Equipment - You must buy/have all equipment (scales, phials, mortar and pestle) before you brew potions.

Types of Potions
For the types of potions available please refer to Magical Drafts and Potions for the current list.

Potion Shelf-Life/Usage
Each potion has a listed shelf-life/restriction usage (or if there are not restrictions, it will be clearly marked). You can pour your potion out so that you can create more but if you pour the potion out you cannot collect the reward for the potion and your Magical EXP will not be returned.

Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble
There is one monthly activity that allows you to work together with other members to create a potion by donating certain ingredients. At the end of the round (depending on whether or not all of the ingredients were donated) you will receive the potion. Standard requirements and Magical EXP usage may not be included in the round so be sure to read the information provided on the activity's page since it is separate from regular potion-making.

Books

In order to brew some of the potions you must have a certain book.

Magical Drafts and Potions: The standard book for potion-making that you will purchase for your First Year.

Advanced Potion-Making: For the N.E.W.T. level potions you must have this book and have passed the N.E.W.T. for potions. You will be purchasing this book for your Seventh Year but will not be able to use it until after the N.E.W.T.s level.

Phials

Regular Phial Extra Phial

Phials are used to brew potions and you are allowed only a limited amount of phials per a month (unless you earn extra). Some potions may take up more than one phial so please be sure to read up on the potion you wish to brew.

1. You will be given a total of four phials to start.
2. Extra phials can be earned through certain tasks or awarded to you. They have a blue tint to them. Any phials offered to you on the site or through activities will be blue.
3. If you earn extra phials they may only be used once and you will not receive it back. You must state in the form somewhere that you are using an extra phial (once you have exceeded four phials).
4. Make sure when a phial is used you either remove it from your trade post or have an area where "used phials" are.
5. Unused phials do not carry over the next month. If you do not use them you will start with four phials again.

Cauldrons

Your cauldron type can allow you to have more phials to start off with as well. First Years must buy the pewter cauldron.

When you begin to move up in the levels you may choose to purchase another cauldron or simply buy a "booster" of sorts for your current cauldron to allow you to have more phials to begin the next round with. You must always state what cauldron you have and if you decide to keep your original cauldron you must state you bought the booster.

Brew A Potion

1. In order to brew a potion you must have all of the needed ingredients and reach all requirements (correct level, Magical EXP, etc) for the potion you wish to brew..
2. Once you are ready to brew the potion you must turn in your phial to be "graded" and then you will receive the potion you brewed.
3. When you receive the potion you must remove a phial from your trade post (or just keep track of the "used phials").
4. When you are ready to use your potion you must fill out a form and you will receive the reward for your potion (if applicable) and an empty phial to replace the potion bottle. Please remember to remove your potion once it has been used.
5. Potion coupons can only be redeemed for one of the listed type of cards/items. Potion coupons can be stacked and are unlimited as far as how many you are allowed to have at a time. However, you are only allowed to brew potion coupons twice a month.
